Trial Begins for Teens Linked to Teacher’s Beheading

On Monday, November 27, six teenagers in France went on trial for their alleged roles in the 2020 beheading of their history and geography teacher.

The trial, which is scheduled to conclude on December 8, 2023, takes place in juvenile court, reflecting the defendants’ juvenile status at the time of the incident. The proceedings occur behind closed doors, accessible only to parties directly involved in the case.

Samuel Paty, 47, was the victim of the brutal crime. He was murdered near his school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, a Paris suburb, on October 16, 2020. The primary perpetrator, Abdoullakh Anzorov, an 18-year-old Chechen refugee, was subsequently killed by police. The attack followed Paty’s display of Prophet Mohammed caricatures from Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical magazine, in a class discussion about French free speech laws.

The six teenagers, aged 14 or 15 at the time, are accused of various roles leading to Paty’s murder. Five face charges of criminal conspiracy with intent to commit violence, allegedly identifying Paty to Anzorov in exchange for money. The sixth defendant, then 13, faces accusations of making false allegations about Paty, which were later discredited.

Legal representatives present contrasting views. Louis Cailliez, representing the Paty family, seeks to unravel the motives behind the teenagers’ “unforgivable” actions. Conversely, Antoine Ory, defending one accused, points to his client’s remorse and dread of facing the Paty family. The teenagers, now high school students, reportedly did not foresee murder as the outcome, expecting at most social media backlash or minor physical harm to Paty.

This trial is part of a larger investigation, including eight adults, with their trial slated for late 2024. The minors’ role in the events leading to Paty’s assassination remains a pivotal aspect of both ongoing and future legal proceedings.

The case has renewed attention to jihadist violence in France. Nearly two years after Paty’s murder, in October, another teacher, Dominique Bernard, was fatally stabbed in a separate incident, highlighting the continuous threat of radical Islamist violence in the country. This follows a history of attacks by Islamist militants, notably the 2015 Charlie Hebdo shooting.
