Thomas Kenneth (“TK”) Mattingly II, the astronaut who was pivotal in bringing the imperiled Apollo 13 crew safely back to Earth, died at age 87 in Arlington, Virginia on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
Mattingly was not only a distinguished figure in the narrative of NASA but also a revered rear admiral in the United States Navy, embodying the spirit and determination that the space race demanded.
Mattingly’s life, which started on March 17, 1936, was a testament to commitment and courage. His selection by NASA in 1966 was just the beginning of an illustrious career marked by significant achievements.
Although he is often remembered for the mission he did not fly, Mattingly’s influence on Apollo 13 was critical. His removal from the flight crew due to exposure to German measles was a precaution that ironically positioned him to help navigate the mission through its most perilous challenge after the April 13, 1970, incident that jeopardized the astronauts’ safe return.
Working with the mission control team, Mattingly’s vital contributions, particularly his insight on utilizing the lunar module as a “lifeboat,” were instrumental in orchestrating the safe return of the Apollo 13 crew back to Earth.
His achievements in space exploration did not end there. As part of Apollo 16, Mattingly circumnavigated the moon 64 times and undertook the second deep space extra-vehicular activity, which involved retrieving critical film and data.
Mattingly’s pioneering spirit continued as he commanded two Space Shuttle missions. His leadership in STS-4 in 1982 and STS-51-C in 1985 demonstrated his relentless pursuit of pushing the boundaries of space exploration. His retirement from NASA and the Navy concluded a chapter of progress and innovation in the history of aeronautics.
