In McMinn County, Tennessee, skeletal remains located by hunters in a wooded area have been identified. They belong to David Dewayne Abbott, a man from Georgia who was reported missing on June 23, 2016.

At the time of his disappearance, Abbott was 43 and had known health conditions, including schizophrenia. His last known location was near his truck, situated less than a mile from where the remains were found.

Identity confirmation came after an extensive forensic autopsy. Added validation was provided by Steve Blevins, a retired detective who spearheaded the investigation into Abbott’s 2016 disappearance. Blevins, despite retiring, maintained interest and persistence in the case.

The events leading to Abbott’s disappearance and his eventual demise remain uncertain. The current evidence doesn’t suggest any foul play. It is speculated that Abbott entered the woods after leaving his truck and died there. Questions remain about the cause of death and why his remains went undiscovered for so long in a location close to both a road and a business.

Abbott’s family has responded with a combination of relief and sadness. Public statements from Abbott’s fiancée and stepdaughter reflect their anguish and puzzlement about the prolonged undetected presence of his remains in a fairly accessible location.

McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy’s remarks emphasized the praiseworthy efforts of Steve Blevins, the retired detective. Blevins’ enduring dedication to this case ultimately brought some answers to the Abbott family. Such commitment from law enforcement professionals, even after retirement, underscores the lengths they go to for justice and family closure.
