shooting at New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord on November 17, 2023, resulted in the deaths of a security guard and a gunman.

John Madore, 33, armed with a 9mm pistol, opened fire in the hospital lobby, killing Bradley Haas, a 63-year-old security guard who had formerly served as a police chief.

The situation escalated when a state trooper, on patrol at the hospital, confronted and fatally shot Madore. The prompt actions of Haas and the trooper were later lauded by authorities for averting further tragedy.

With no immediate connection identified between Madore and the hospital staff, the incident has left many questions unanswered. The facility, which specializes in mental health treatment, was quickly secured by state police.

Despite the presence of 185 people in the hospital at the time of the shooting, no patients were injured.

This incident has reignited concerns about the security of healthcare facilities, especially those serving vulnerable populations. The New Hampshire State Hospital, equipped with metal detectors, reflects the ongoing efforts to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.

Governor Chris Sununu acknowledged the effectiveness of the response by first responders and law enforcement. Following the incident, the hospital remained functional but closed to visitors for the evening. Investigations into Madore’s background and motives are ongoing.
