Renowned Actress Suzanne Shepherd Passes Away at 89

Veteran actress Suzanne Shepherd, celebrated for her roles in the film “Goodfellas” and the series “The Sopranos,” has died at age 89. 

Shepherd, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, passed away in her sleep on Friday, November 17, at her home in New York City. Her daughter, Kate Shepherd, stated that her mother had been struggling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and experienced significant weakening in her final days. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.

Shepherd’s journey in acting began in 1988 with a role in the Julia Roberts-starring film “Mystic Pizza.” She quickly became known for portraying complex, often domineering maternal characters. In Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas,” she notably played the mother of Lorraine Bracco’s character. Her portrayal of Mary DeAngelis, Carmela Soprano’s mother in “The Sopranos,” played by Edie Falco, solidified her reputation as a talented character actress.

Shepherd’s extensive career spanned various roles in both film and television. Her filmography includes roles in “Uncle Buck,” “Lolita,” and “Requiem for a Dream.” Her television appearances encompassed shows like “Law & Order” and “Blue Bloods.” One of her recent roles was in the Netflix comedy “The Week Of.”

Beyond her acting career, Shepherd was devoted to teaching the art of acting, a commitment that lasted over four decades. She taught at several renowned institutions, including the Trinity Square Conservatory, Hartman Conservatory, the Berghof Studio, and her own studio in New York City. Shepherd also directed stage productions, showcasing her diverse talents in the performing arts.

Shepherd is survived by her daughter Kate, son-in-law Miles McManus, and granddaughter Isabelle Shepherd. She also leaves behind a legacy that includes her numerous fans and students who found inspiration in her work and teachings.
