Joss Ackland, the esteemed British actor known for his dynamic performances across film, theater, and television, passed away at the age of 95 in his Devon, England home on Thursday, November 22, 2023. His career, spanning over seven decades, was marked by a distinctive deep voice and a talent for playing commanding characters.

Born in London on February 29, 1928, Ackland’s early life was marked by poverty. He was the son of an Irish journalist and an English mother. His passion for acting emerged early, and he refined his craft at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Ackland started his professional acting career in 1945, quickly becoming a prominent figure in UK theater.

Ackland’s prolific career included more than 130 appearances in films, television, and radio. He is widely recognized for roles such as Arjen Rudd in “Lethal Weapon 2” and Hans in “The Mighty Ducks.” His work in “White Mischief” garnered him a BAFTA nomination.

Despite his film success, Ackland’s true love was theater. He took on significant roles in British stage productions, including Falstaff in Shakespeare’s plays and a role in the original cast of “Evita.”

In the 1980s, Ackland’s career saw a revival with parts in films like “The Hunt for Red October” and “The Sicilian.” His contributions to the arts extended beyond acting, encompassing music videos and audiobook narrations. Ackland’s later years saw him reflect on his career choices, particularly the smaller roles he accepted out of his love for acting.

In “The Mighty Ducks,” Ackland’s portrayal of Hans, the sporting goods store owner, was crucial in motivating the main character’s hockey passion. His ability to inspire both on and off the screen was evident in this role.

Continuing his acting career into his 90s, Ackland took on roles in “Midsomer Murders” and “Kingdom,” and played King Lear on stage in 2013.

Ackland’s personal life was marked by his marriage to Rosemary Kirkcaldy in 1951, with whom he had seven children. Following her passing in 2002, he is survived by his five daughters, two sons, 32 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
