In an unfortunate case of mistaken identity, a San Antonio, Texas, residence was barraged with bullets, leading to the tragic death of 25-year-old Novita Brazil in October 2022. The two teenagers implicated in this case, Isaac Gonzales, 17, and Rene Gonzales, 15, have been arrested for their role in the fatal drive-by shooting.

The young woman was in the safety of her own home, focused on her studies, when the Gonzales teens unleashed a hail of over 100 bullets. The assailants had intended to strike back at a gang rival, but their grievous mistake led to Brazil’s untimely death and injured a visiting 41-year-old woman.

This incident is part of a worrying trend of gang-related violence in Texas. It starkly illustrates the deadly consequences that can arise from gang disputes and mistaken targets.

The local community was rocked by the sheriff’s description of the shooters. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar condemned the youths as ruthless and indifferent to the value of life. His comments reflect a growing anxiety about gang violence in the region.

Even after being jailed and charged as adults, the two managed to obtain bond. Following their release, they removed their tracking devices and mocked the police in videos on social media while on the run. Their freedom was short-lived, however, as law enforcement, led by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, apprehended Rene on October 26 and Isaac on October 31, 2023.

Novita Brazil’s acquaintances remember her as a committed individual who was poised for success. Her death has provoked serious discussion and advocacy for more effective measures to combat the threat of gang violence in Texas.
