On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, in Gujarat, India, a 10-year-old boy was attacked and killed by a group of monkeys.
Dipak Thakor, while playing with friends near a temple in Salki, a village in the Dehgam Taluka of the Gandhinagar district, encountered a group of monkeys described as notoriously aggressive. The boy suffered fatal injuries after the monkeys jumped on him, causing severe puncture wounds and lacerations.
Local officials reported that one monkey inflicted particularly grievous harm, taking out his intestines, leading to the boy’s death. Rushed to his home and then to a hospital, Thakor was declared dead on arrival.
This incident is the third monkey attack in Salki within a week. The monkeys responsible for Thakor’s death and other recent attacks have evaded capture by local authorities.
Vishal Chaudhary, a forest official in Salki, confirmed that efforts to capture the monkeys, including four adults known for their aggression, are ongoing. Two langurs have been captured, with efforts to trap the rest continuing.
Monkey attacks are becoming more frequent across India. Earlier this year, a three-year-old was taken by a monkey and later found safe after a police search. Villagers also said more than 250 dogs had been killed by the monkeys in recent months. These incidents underscore the growing concern over interactions between wildlife and human populations in India.
