Celebrated MLB Pitcher Guillermo “Willie” Hernández Passes Away at 69

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Guillermo “Willie” Hernández, renowned for his role in Major League Baseball, died at 69 in his home in Sebring, Florida, on November 21, 2023. He had been managing long-term heart issues, including having a pacemaker installed in 2009. 

Hernández, born on November 14, 1954, in Aguada, Puerto Rico, started his MLB journey after being signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1973. He first appeared in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs in 1977, beginning a distinguished 13-year career with the Cubs, Phillies, and Tigers.

Hernández’s tenure with the Detroit Tigers in 1984 remains a highlight of baseball history. He earned both the American League Cy Young and Most Valuable Player Awards in the same season, a rare achievement. During that season, he recorded a 1.92 ERA and 32 saves in 80 games, completing 68 games as a closer. His pivotal role in the postseason, including appearances in three World Series games and securing two crucial saves, was instrumental in the Tigers’ championship victory.

Prior to his time with the Tigers, Hernández played for the Chicago Cubs from 1977 to 1983 and briefly for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1983. His transfer to the Tigers in March 1984 was a significant turning point in his career. Hernández’s stint with the Tigers, lasting from 1984 to 1989, featured three All-Star selections and a notable 2.60 ERA over 218 games.

In his MLB career, Hernández achieved a 3.38 ERA with 147 saves and struck out 788 batters across 1,044⅔ innings in 744 games. His postseason record includes a stellar 1.32 ERA and three saves in 10 games.

The baseball world mourns the loss of Hernández, with many from the sports community, including former teammates and fans, paying tribute. Alan Trammell, a Hall of Fame player and former teammate with the Tigers, spoke highly of Hernández’s contribution to their 1984 World Series title.

Funeral arrangements for Hernández are being planned in his hometown of Aguada, Puerto Rico.

Hernández’s legacy in baseball is further cemented by his induction into the Puerto Rican Sports Hall of Fame.
