Mandy Benn, a 43-year-old woman from Michigan, was convicted on Friday, October 6, 2023, of second-degree murder and operating a vehicle under the influence. This ruling is connected to a crash that occurred during the Make-A-Wish charity bicycle ride in 2022.

During the incident, Benn tried to surpass a UPS truck, causing her to cross into oncoming traffic. This led to a direct collision with several bicyclists who were taking part in the charity event. Among the cyclists, Edward Erickson, 48, and Michael Salhaney, 57, were fatally injured.

The collision also resulted in injuries for three other riders.

Post-incident analysis revealed that Benn seemed confused and potentially under the influence, even though no alcohol was found in her system. Symptoms like slurred speech and difficulty in following directions indicated the potential effect of prescription drugs. However, Benn’s defense argued that she had taken only a medically recommended dose of her medicine before driving.

Community members recognized the contributions of both Erickson and Salhaney. Erickson was particularly known for his dedication to cycling and helping children, while Salhaney, a father of seven, was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to his family and the rule of law.
