Following the episode, Rivera was taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. Medical personnel there declared him dead soon after his arrival. The occurrence was confirmed by the school’s top official, who conveyed sympathies to the grieving family and friends.

Teammates of Rivera spoke of him with great affection, highlighting his positive spirit and dedication, both on the football field and within the community. His sudden absence is mourned by many.
