On September 22, Gainesville, Florida, law enforcement relayed the troubling news of a three-year-old girl’s death after she and her twin sibling were left without supervision for eight hours.

Earlier on September 1, emergency responders received a call about a young girl who was not showing signs of life. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead. Donrea McLaughlin, 22, the child’s mother, and Sean D. Lee II, 22, her boyfriend, are now under legal scrutiny in connection with the incident.

McLaughlin initially provided a statement to law enforcement that she had come across her daughter in a non-responsive state after a nap. McLaughlin said she had been sleeping for an extended period before being awakened by Lee. Upon waking, she said the two found the young child in a critical state.

But a deeper investigation exposed that both individuals had been at work for a total of eight hours, leaving the twins at home without care. When they returned home, they found the child in a dire condition.

Further investigative efforts revealed potential long-term neglect and mistreatment, resulting in the death of one of the twins and injury to the other. The other child was given medical treatment on the day of the incident, as confirmed by the police report.

While details and the precise cause of the girl’s death remain undisclosed due to a sealed arrest document, the investigation continues.

During the investigation process, both McLaughlin and Lee relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where they had lived earlier. With the collaborative efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service Regional Fugitive Task Force, the two were arrested in Atlanta. Their transfer back to Alachua County, Florida, is currently pending.

Both McLaughlin and Lee face charges, including felony murder, child abuse, and neglect. The bond for securing their release has been determined to be $4.5 million.
