On the evening of October 12 in Hialeah, Florida, a sobering 911 call was received. The voice on the line belonged to 13-year-old Derek Rosa, who admitted to the grave act of stabbing his mother, 39-year-old Irina Garcia, to death while she slept.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Garcia’s body with multiple stab wounds, particularly around the neck region. Next to her lay a crib, where her two-week-old baby girl, Rosa’s half-sister, lay unharmed.
The young suspect, Rosa, has a reputation in his school as an honor student, achieving high academic standards. In contrast to the act he committed, neighbors have often observed him assisting his mother with various tasks and being a generally helpful individual.
Adding to the shock of the incident, Derek took and shared photographs of the crime scene, which resulted in a comprehensive three-day assessment at a healthcare institution. The young teen is now looking at second-degree murder charges.
Decisions about how his trial will be conducted, as an adult or juvenile, are currently under discussion.
