Morgan State University, a historically Black college in Baltimore, Maryland, went into lockdown Tuesday night, October 3, 2023 after five students were shot on campus during homecoming week.

All five victims were aged between 18 and 22 and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting took place outdoors around 9:25 p.m. The university police, who were already on patrol, responded promptly and contacted the Baltimore police for additional support. Initially, the situation was treated as an active shooter scenario, and students and residents were advised to remain inside for safety.

By 11:45 pm, police relayed that there was no ongoing threat. The lockdown was lifted by the university at 12:30 am, and they also resumed their shuttle services. City Council Member Ryan Dorsey mentioned the potential involvement of three shooters, but this detail has not been verified by the police.

Earlier that day, an event to crown Mister and Miss Morgan State took place. University president David Wilson addressed the public in a press conference, indicating that students were transitioning from this event to the Student Center when the shooting occurred.

As a result of this unfortunate event during the homecoming week, the university decided to cancel classes on Wednesday, October 4. Additionally, counseling services were made accessible for students in need.

WJZ, a local CBS station, reported a bullet hole found in a seventh-floor window of a freshman dormitory. The exact location from where the shots originated, whether from within the dormitory or outside, is still uncertain.

Preliminary investigations by local authorities hint at the possibility of a targeted attack, but the specific motive and the number of involved shooters remain inconclusive.
