In the early hours of October 1, a devastating fire broke out in the Fonda nightclub, located in the southeastern Spanish city of Murcia. The flames rapidly extended to two adjacent clubs, the Teatre and Golden. As reported by Mayor José Ballesta of Murcia, the calamity resulted in 13 casualties.

The fire is believed to have started on the first floor of the Fonda nightclub at around 6 am. Subsequent investigation by emergency services found several victims at this location. The Fonda nightclub bore significant damage, with the roof’s collapse being particularly challenging for the first responders, as noted by Spain’s National Police spokesperson, Diego Seral.

Footage shared online captures the intensity of the inferno, showing large flames and thick plumes of smoke emanating from the club’s windows. Emergency responders, including nearly 40 firefighters with 12 fire trucks, worked diligently at the scene, attempting to quell the flames and rescue potential survivors.

Given the night’s festivities, several birthday celebrations were in progress across the clubs. An unidentified survivor recounted their narrow escape, emphasizing their departure moments before alarms blared and power was cut off. They expressed deep concern, stating that several close family members and friends remain unaccounted for.

In light of this catastrophe, a three-day mourning period was proclaimed by Mayor Ballesta. As a mark of respect, flags at Murcia’s City Hall have been positioned at half-mast.

As the city grieves, investigations persist to determine the factors that led to this disastrous incident. The hope remains that such findings can prevent future occurrences and provide answers to the bereaved families.
