On Saturday, October 7, western Afghanistan experienced a series of strong earthquakes, with the main tremor measuring a magnitude of 6.3.

The impact of these earthquakes is dire, with the number of deceased exceeding 2,000, based on information from a Taliban government representative. Notably, the Zenda Jan district in Herat province was most affected. Mahal Wadakha and other villages were decimated, and numerous individuals are trapped beneath rubble.

Early estimates from local governing bodies suggested 100 people were killed and another 500 injured. Yet, these statistics have grown in the subsequent days. The United Nations has expressed concerns about an even higher final toll. The region has experienced aftershocks since the initial event, exacerbating the situation. These subsequent tremors have caused many in Herat to abandon their homes.

Abdul Wahid Rayan of the Ministry of Information and Culture stated that six villages were completely destroyed. Data shows that about 465 homes were razed to the ground, with an additional 135 suffering damages.

Focused efforts are in place to rescue those trapped in the aftermath. Rescuers are working around the clock. Various global entities are aiding in the effort. The World Health Organization, for instance, has sent vehicles to assist with casualties.

Condolences have been shared by both the ruling Taliban and international representatives to the affected families.
