A young boy was killed on Detroit’s West Side on October 18, while visiting his grandmother. The event took place around 3 p.m. on Pierson Street near Westfield Avenue.

Reports indicate that while the boy was playing in the fenced backyard of his grandmother’s home, a neighbor’s dog allegedly entered the yard and attacked him.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the young boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The distressing situation was further heightened by the pleas of the boy’s grandmother, who desperately called for help during the attack. Nearby residents heard her cries, alerting them to the harrowing event unfolding next door.

The Detroit Police Department responded to the incident. In collaboration with Detroit Animal Control, two pit bulls were taken into custody for further investigation. Notably, one of the detained dogs belonged to the victim’s grandmother and reportedly had no involvement in the tragic event. The other dog, believed to be the attacker, has an owner who remains unidentified, and no formal charges have been placed yet.

During a press conference, Detroit Police Department Commander Arnold Williams emphasized the importance of securing pets, especially in residential areas. He highlighted that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards unsecured dogs can pose to the community.

The boy, later identified as Lovell Anderson, has been remembered fondly by his family. Lovell’s aunt, Monique Grant, described him as being “full of life.” Aunt Maple Blackshear remembered him as a “gentleman” who was “helpful” and “sweet.” The aunts further mentioned that Lovell was the only child in the family.

In the wake of this incident, the family sought legal representation. Attorney Peter O’Toole with Fieger Law mentioned that the nature of the attack was severe.

Concerns about loose dogs in the area have been previously raised by local residents. Neighbors Milton and Titianna Pulley, parents to seven children, expressed their worries about unsecured dogs roaming the streets. Comparing them to “loose cannons,” Milton Pulley commented on the unpredictability of such animals and the potential dangers they can inflict.

The community remains in shock, and as the investigation continues, the family seeks answers and requests prayers. “We just ask for everybody’s prayers right now,” expressed Grant.
