189 Bodies Found Decomposing

On October 13, 2023, in Penrose, Colorado, a shocking discovery was made at the Return to Nature Funeral Home. Investigators removed 189 decomposing bodies, significantly surpassing the initial estimates of 115.

This startling increase in count has alarmed local residents and families who had utilized the funeral home’s services.

The probe into the funeral home began after neighbors reported a foul odor, akin to that of a decaying animal, emanating from the facility’s vicinity. This prompted an investigation which unveiled allegations of improper storage of the bodies. The remains were subsequently transported to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office for further examination.

Renowned for its eco-friendly ethos, the funeral home promotes “green” or natural burials without the need for embalming. Their services encompass burying bodies in biodegradable caskets or shrouds, thereby ensuring minimal environmental repercussions. In a nod to sustainability, the funeral home also offers cremation services complemented with a tree planted in a Colorado National Forest as a lasting tribute.

However, the commendable green initiative doesn’t exempt the funeral home from legal obligations. As per Colorado law, bodies must either be buried within 24 hours or suitably refrigerated. The bodies at Return to Nature were not maintained under these stipulated conditions, leading to their advanced state of decomposition.

Jon Hallford, the owner of the funeral home, had previously disclosed to regulators his involvement in taxidermy activities on the property. Acknowledging the ongoing inquiry, Hallford consented to an inspection on October 4, 2023, demonstrating a willingness to cooperate.

While no arrests have been made to date, funeral home employees have been urged to liaise with the Sheriff’s office. This collaboration is anticipated to further the ongoing investigation, ensuring comprehensive information gathering.

The unfolding events have understandably caused considerable anguish among families who have previously engaged the funeral home’s services, leaving them grappling with distress and uncertainty.
