At North Carolina’s renowned Outer Banks, two swimmers met with tragic incidents within a day of each other.

Early on the morning of September 5, a man from Ohio aged 68 was found to be unresponsive in the waters near southern Hatteras Island, as detailed by the National Park Service.

In a closely related incident, a 28-year-old woman from Washington, D.C. was found in a similar state near Avon, Hatteras Island on September 4.

For both, the aggressive surf conditions played a pivotal role. Despite valiant efforts involving cardiopulmonary resuscitation, neither individual could be revived.

According to those who were present when the older man faced difficulty, he had been enjoying a swim when he suddenly called out, signaling he was in distress. He soon went underwater, prompting immediate rescue by onlookers.

On the previous day, the young woman was said to have been engulfed by large waves, making swimming challenging. A bodyboarder and another person on the scene assisted in bringing her back to the beach. Subsequent revival attempts by medical teams were to no avail.

In response to these events, David Hallac, who holds a leadership position at the National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, made a statement. He accentuated the daunting surf conditions currently present, characterized by their vast waves and aggressive rip currents. In his remarks, Hallac emphasized the need for caution and reiterated that even shallow parts of the beach can pose potential dangers. With current conditions in mind, he suggested that only seasoned swimmers consider entering the waters.
