14-year-old died on Friday, September 1, a few hours after participating in a viral social media “One Chip Challenge.”

Harris Wolobah was a student at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Harris consumed a spicy Paqui chip, which later caused him stomach discomfort. Although he felt better after coming home, he was later found passed out when he was about to leave for basketball tryouts.

The exact cause of his death is still unknown, with further investigations underway.

Harris’s mother, Lois, expressed her belief that the complications from consuming the spicy chip led to her son’s death.

Paqui, the brand behind the chip, has issued warnings on its website. It mentions the potential adverse medical effects of eating the spicy snack and emphasizes that the chip is intended for adult consumption. It’s considered to be one of the spiciest chips in the world.

The company’s precautions include seeking medical help if certain symptoms manifest and cleaning hands after handling the chip to prevent irritation. The latest version of the chips contains powerful ingredients: Carolina Reaper peppers and Naga Viper peppers.

For someone with certain health conditions, such as heart problems, the body’s response to very spicy foods might trigger or exacerbate a health issue.

Worcester Schools Superintendent, Rachel Monarrez conveyed the school’s condolences, mentioning the significant loss of a promising student like Harris.

His dedication and hard work were also acknowledged by his basketball coach at St. Bernard’s church team, Douglas Hill.

Autopsy results are pending.
