Hiker Dies in Plunge From Hawaii Waterfall

On September 22 in Kokee State Park, Kauai, Hawaii, a 66-year-old hiker had a fatal fall of nearly 120 feet while touring the Waipo’o Falls Trail with his family.

The incident occurred just days after Mark DeBarr, a father of two, celebrated his 41st wedding anniversary.

The Kauai police are investigating the incident, and the initial reports suggest no evidence of foul play. The autopsy results are still pending.

DeBarr, remembered as an “amazing guy” and a “great man” by friends, hailed from Concord and was an accounting professional. He was an alumnus of Chico State University.

This isn’t the first time a tourist has faced a tragic end in Hawaii. In 2018, a 34-year-old man from Indiana, Greg Miller, died in a related accident at Maui’s Waimoku Falls in Haleakala National Park when a falling rock struck him.

Local organizations such as Life Bridges and the Visitor Aloha Society of Kauai are assisting the DeBarr family during this difficult time.

Although Hawaii is renowned for its breathtaking natural attractions, they can sometimes pose risks. Both tourists and locals are urged to exercise caution while exploring the state’s scenic spots.
