5 Students Dead After Car Plunges Off Overpass

In Gwinnett County, Georgia five teenagers lost their lives when a car went over a wall and landed on the interstate. 

The incident occurred near the intersection of Interstate 85 and Georgia Route 316, close to the Pleasant Hill Road area.

The victims, identified by Gwinnett Police on Monday night, September 4, included three girls and two boys: Katy Gaitan, 17, Ashley Gaitan, 16, Coral Lorenzo, 17, all from Atlanta; Hung Nguyen, 18, from Lawrenceville; and Abner Santana, 19, from Suwanee, Georgia. 

Among the victims, three were students at Lakeside High School in DeKalb County.

The accident, which involved three vehicles, also left three individuals injured. These survivors are currently in stable condition at a local hospital.

Details from the scene indicate that around 3:45 am, one car fell about 50 feet from Georgia Route 316, landing on I-85 South and colliding with another vehicle. Several occupants were ejected upon impact. Corporal Christian D’Allaird of the Gwinnett County Police Department stated that all the deceased were in the car that fell.

The exact cause of the crash remains unclear. Corporal D’Allaird mentioned, “We are still investigating why the vehicle went over the wall.” Authorities are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding this event.
