A 17-year-old boy was arrested following a dirt bike incident that resulted in the death of a three-year-old girl and an injury to her mother.

The event occurred in Mead Valley, Riverside County, California on August 31 at around 7:30 pm.

The young girl, Odalys Navarro, was riding her bicycle on a dirt pathway when she and her five-month-pregnant mother were struck from behind by the dirt bike.

Following the incident, the teen fled the scene. However, California Highway Patrol officials later located him and the bike. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked at the Riverside Juvenile Hall on charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in fatal injuries. The suspect’s identity remains undisclosed due to his minor status.

The mother, Rubi Navarro, and her daughter were on their way home from a nearby park when the incident took place near Steel Peak Drive and Palm Street. Both were transported to a hospital for treatment. In a subsequent update, Rubi Navarro revealed that while she suffered serious injuries, her daughter did not survive. The young girl would have celebrated her fourth birthday later this month.

Investigators are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
