A talented 23-year-old TV news producer lost her life after falling from a rope swing at Folsom Lake.

The accident occurred at the lake near Sacramento, California on August 12 when Kathryn Hoedt, fell 30 feet onto the rocky shoreline below.

A graduate of San Jose State University and New York University, Hoedt joined KCRA 3, where she produced the station’s morning show. Known for her enthusiasm and vibrant personality, Hoedt was a valued member of the news team.

News director Derek Schnell remarked, “Kathryn’s energy and laughter brought a spark to our newsroom. Her dedication to journalism and serving our community was unwavering.”

Following the fall, friends at the scene assisted in transporting her to a nearby boat ramp, where park officials were present. An off-duty doctor immediately began CPR, and an ambulance took Hoedt to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Folsom Lake authorities have a policy against rope swings and enforce it by removing any they find. Mike Howard, superintendent for the Folsom sector, said the lake’s water levels had dropped 15 feet since May, leading to increased risks with swings.

Barry Smith, a chief ranger from California State Parks, warned that swings are unpredictable. “You can never trust the swing ropes since you don’t know who put them up or the strength of the ropes. The tree or branch can give way, resulting in tragedy.”
