A US MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor navy aircraft tragically crashed during a training exercise on Melville Island, near Darwin, Australia, on August 27.
The incident, which occurred while the aircraft was headed to the Tiwi Islands, claimed the lives of three US marines and injured 20 others.
The US Marine Corps validated the casualties and reported ongoing recovery endeavors. Immediate medical aid was provided to the injured, who were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital.
The deceased Marines were identified as Capt. Eleanor V. Beau, Cpl. Spencer R. Collart, and Maj. Tobin J. Lewis.
The Northern Territory’s chief minister, Natasha Fyles, voiced deep sorrow over the accident. Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, extended full support and collaboration in this grim time.
The Osprey aircraft, recognized for its dual functionalities mimicking helicopters and planes, plays a vital role in defense maneuvers.
The tragedy follows a recent crash involving an Australian Taipan helicopter in July.
Exercise Predators Run 2023, currently in progress in Australia’s Top End, includes a troop of 2,500 soldiers from various countries, with US Marines partnering with Australian and Philippine troops.
