A somber atmosphere enveloped the New York Police Department (NYPD) following the death of Officer Alexis Martinez, who was shot by his father in a suspected murder-suicide on August 2.
The incident occurred while he was asleep at his father’s Bronx residence. Reports suggest that Martinez’s father, believed to have been facing mental health difficulties, shot his son in the head around midday before taking his own life.
Having joined the NYPD in 2018, Martinez, 26, was a part of the Bronx narcotics division and also played on a baseball team with fellow officers. His absence from a game raised concerns, leading a colleague to find him deceased.
A video on Twitter by Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban displayed a tribute to the fallen officer.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams also shared his sentiments online.
A gathering took place at the 34th Precinct in Washington Heights to remember Martinez, with attendees releasing balloons.
Known for his dedication, Martinez was remembered by his cousin, Felix Camacho, as someone always willing to lend a hand.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
