Following a shooting incident at a funeral in Fort Deposit, central Alabama, a man was sentenced on August 7 to a 10-year federal prison term for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

On June 26, 2021, Gerald Dyron Little, 42, of Montgomery, caused a disturbance at the funeral of his step-uncle, James Gipson. After initially leaving the service when asked by family members, Little returned during the graveside ceremony. An altercation ensued with relatives. During this confrontation, Little fired his weapon, killing Jerry Gipson, the deceased’s brother.

Federal authorities stated that Little, who had a previous felony conviction, violated federal regulations by possessing a firearm and ammunition. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives led the investigation, connecting Little to the crime through shell casings. Following his prison sentence, Little will undergo three years of supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Sandra J. Stewart highlighted the necessity of ensuring mourners can grieve without the threat of gun violence.

The incident has also prompted state-level charges against Little for murder and attempted murder.

The conflict began when Little played loud music from his car, which escalated to the tragic events.

Three other individuals were injured in the shooting.
