A training exercise on Thursday, August 17 resulted in the death of an IRS special agent at the Federal Correctional Institution’s firing range, positioned near Pioneer Road and Interstate 17 in Phoenix.
According to Aimee Arthur-Wastell from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, several federal agencies were present and in training when the unfortunate event occurred.
While the FBI confirmed the agent’s involvement in regular training activities, further details of the event or any related arrests have not been revealed.
Upon their arrival at the scene, Phoenix police located the grievously injured agent who had been shot, and facilitated his immediate transportation to a nearby medical facility. No injuries were reported among the staff of the FBOP or the firing range.
The investigative process is spearheaded by the FBI, in conjunction with the Phoenix police, and their findings will be directed to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Arizona for review.
