A tire failure on an RV led to a tragic accident on Interstate 81 near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, on the evening of August 9. The RV, after losing its front left tire around 8:50 pm, veered across the median and crashed into an oncoming tractor-trailer.
The head-on collision resulted in the loss of five lives. Four of the deceased were from the RV and belonged to the Molander family of Middletown, Pennsylvania: Donald, Kimberly, Miranda, and Dane. The fifth individual, James Shade, was the driver of the tractor-trailer and hailed from Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Coincidentally, the RV was towing a trailer and the truck was towing double trailers.
All involved were declared dead at the accident location. The incident also claimed the life of a dog. Law enforcement is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. The interstate where the accident occurred was shut down for 10 hours and delays continued into the next morning.
