In an incident captured on video, an escaped convict, identified as a 29-year-old man from New Hampshire, was shot and killed by police in a Miami Beach Victoria’s Secret store on Thursday, July 27.

The man, Darien Young, was discovered shoplifting lingerie from the store located at the intersection of Lincoln Road and Jefferson Avenue.

Upon being detected by store staff, Young took a woman and her teenage daughter hostage, threatening them with a knife. The video footage shows him holding one of the hostages by the neck, hiding behind the store’s checkout counter. The daughter was seen nearby, her hands folded in prayer, as Young issued threats to her safety.

Eyewitnesses reported that Young ignored the responding officer’s demands to drop the weapon and release the hostages. The situation took a turn for the worse when Young let go of the mother and seized her daughter. The Miami Beach police officer, fearing for the safety of the hostages, shot Young, ending the standoff.

Young was transported to a local hospital’s trauma unit in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries. The mother and daughter hostages were unharmed due to the officer’s swift intervention.

Investigations into Young’s background revealed that he was a fugitive from New Hampshire, having escaped on July 21, a week prior to the incident. He was serving time for drug-related offenses, falsifying evidence, and possession of stolen property. His parole eligibility date was set for July 31, 2023.

The reasons for Young’s journey to Miami Beach and his decision to steal lingerie from Victoria’s Secret are still under investigation.
