On the morning of Monday, August 14, at approximately 6:30 am, a tragic chain of events took place outside of Durham, North Carolina.
Jeffrey McKay, 39, a state corrections worker, inadvertently caused the death of 17-year-old Chad Woods Jr. when he crashed into him with his truck. Chad Jr. had been walking with his father, Chad Woods, 41, along the road after they ran out of gas.
McKay, who held a position as an electrical supervisor within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, reported the accident by calling 911.
However, subsequent to the unfortunate accident, the bereaved father pulled out a gun and shot McKay. After the shooting, Woods is believed to have discarded his weapon in a pond close by and commandeered McKay’s truck, departing from the scene, and leaving his son and McKay in the road.
Woods was later detained by the police not far from his residence.
Lawrence Claiborne, Woods’ father, recollected his son’s distress and the words, “He just killed my son.”
Chad Woods’ court appearance was scheduled for August 21.
