The theater world mourned the loss of Chris Peluso, a Broadway star celebrated for his roles in “Mamma Mia!” and “Wicked,” who passed away at 40. The sad announcement came from his family on August 15, with Playbill relaying the news.

The specific circumstances of his death remain undisclosed. His passing follows a hiatus from his vibrant acting career, during which he sought treatment for schizoaffective disorder, starting one year ago.

A distinguished alumnus of the University of Michigan’s Theatre Department, Peluso was admired for his exceptional talents, particularly as a dependable understudy. He is remembered for his breakthrough as The Balladeer in the 2004 rendition of “Assassins,” his performances in “Lestat,” and his portrayal of several principal characters in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” His portrayal of Sky in the 2008 production of “Mamma Mia!” was particularly noteworthy, as was his role as Fiyero in the touring production of “Wicked” and his contributions to “The Glorious Ones” Off-Broadway.

His expertise also reached across the Atlantic to London’s West End, where he captivated audiences in “Miss Saigon,” “The Woman in White,” “Death Takes a Holiday,” and “Show Boat,” and he shone brightly in the UK tour of “Funny Girl.”

Tributes highlighting Peluso’s legacy and warm-hearted nature have flowed in from colleagues and institutions alike, including a touching Instagram post from the Michigan Musical Theatre Department, with interim chair Linda Goodrich expressing deep sorrow. Acknowledgments of his luminous spirit and kindness also came from “SEAL Team” actress Toni Trucks and performer Desi Oakley.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Jessica Gomes, their daughter Aria Li, and son Caio Lian, along with a community of friends and admirers who will forever celebrate his life and contributions to the stage.
