An 11-year-old boy in Fayetteville, North Carolina is under scrutiny after the fatal shooting of an eight-year-old girl, at his residence on July 25.

Jenesis Dockery was with her younger sister at the babysitter’s house. The babysitter was the boy’s mother, who had watched Jenesis and her sister numerous times. Sadly, two days after the event, Dockery died.

Though no official charges have been declared, possibilities of manslaughter and larceny of a firearm charges against the boy are under consideration. Following the incident, he was placed in the Department of Juvenile Detention by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

It has been reported that the gun used was taken from an unlocked safe in the house. The boy had previously uploaded pictures with firearms on digital platforms. The Dockery family’s legal counsel has acknowledged the gun’s original placement.

Ongoing investigations hint at further questions about the accountability of those overseeing the children.

Jenesis’ grieving parents wore orange pins symbolizing gun violence awareness to her funeral, and got matching tattoos to memorialize her.
