An eight-year-old girl was fatally struck by a passing school bus on Wednesday morning, August 16, at around 7:18 am, while waiting to be picked up by her scheduled bus.
The accident occurred near the intersection of 47th Street South and Kansas Highway 15 in Wichita, Kansas. Harmoney Marie Harper was on her way to Derby Elementary School and was at her regular bus stop with her brother when the incident occurred.
Harmoney stepped into the street from between two parked vehicles and was hit by the Derby school bus. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the site, but the girl’s injuries proved fatal, and she was declared deceased on the scene.
Harmoney’s father, Jasper, said his wife woke him up after hearing his son screaming outside. By the time he got to the front door he heard, “Call 911, my daughter’s dead.”
Derby Public Schools Superintendent, Heather Bohaty, shared a statement regarding the tragic event: “We are deeply affected by the loss of one of our students. We have arranged for additional social workers from across the district to provide support for our students and staff during this time.”
