After an escape from a medical center, a 35-year-old prison inmate accused of a series of violent crimes, has been located by California authorities.

The inmate, 35-year-old Eric Abril, was initially arrested on April 6.

Prior to his escape, Abril was being held without bail in Placer County Jail. He was arrested after an alleged altercation in Roseville’s Mahany Park, during which he is accused of shooting and injuring a Highway Patrol officer. The situation escalated, with Abril allegedly taking a married couple hostage. This incident led to the death of James MacEgan, 72, and the injury of his wife, Patricia. In response, Abril was charged with murder, attempted murder, and other related offenses.

The daring escape occurred on Sunday, July 9, at the Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Details from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office reveal that Abril was able to escape custody on the second floor of the medical center. He reportedly managed to slip out of his restraints and left the hospital, evading the sole deputy assigned to watch him. The reason for Abril’s presence at the hospital remains undisclosed.

The day following his escape, Abril was found shirtless, barefoot, and wearing only his prison boxer shorts, hiding in the dense brush by Antelope Creek ravine, situated behind the Edgewood Apartments. After a medical clearance, Abril was returned to the Placer County Jail.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Abril’s escape is ongoing. The review will determine whether the assigned deputy deviated from any departmental procedures during the incident.
