On Monday, July 10, three people allegedly committed suicide in NYC, each being hit by a subway train, at different locations in Manhattan, as confirmed by the police.
The string of events started at 8 am at the East 86th Street station on the Upper East Side. A 47-year-old man identified as Colin Murphy threw himself in front of a downtown 6 train and died instantly on the spot.
A couple of hours later, at the West 72nd Street station on the Upper West Side, a 22-year-old man, identified as Samuel Cohen, met a similar fate. He was hit by a downtown 2 train around 10 am. The young man was rushed to Mount Sinai West by emergency medical services, but he didn’t survive. Law enforcement is still trying to ascertain if he deliberately jumped in front of the train or had climbed down onto the tracks. The incident is, however, considered a suicide.
At the Lexington Avenue/63rd Street station, a third individual, Anthony Collado, 42, took his life by leaping in front of an uptown Q train around 6:39 pm. The police declared the person dead at the scene.
Officials are currently investigating the details of these unfortunate events in an attempt to discern the factors that led to the victims’ actions, but they do not believe they are connected
There were 1,364 incidents involving people on the tracks in 2022, including 88 deaths.
