A young woman was arrested after unintentionally shooting her 50-year-old mother in the head using a .40 caliber handgun.
Crystal Lissette Mar was arrested on July 8 and is facing charges of aggravated assault on a family member with a deadly weapon.
Authorities received a 911 call in the early morning of July 8, signaling a shooting at a home on Hibiscus Lane in Laredo, Texas. The caller, identified as the victim, communicated to emergency services that her daughter had accidentally shot her.
The injured mother, who was conscious and capable of speaking, was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and later transported to the Laredo Medical Center for further attention.
The mother, during her questioning, stated that her daughter arrived at the house around 3 am and asked to borrow her phone. Her daughter explained that she had left her own phone in her friend’s car. The mother noticed what looked like a handgun in her daughter’s purse and requested that the firearm be removed from the house and the bullets taken out.
While trying to unload the weapon, the daughter struggled to remove the magazine. After managing to detach it, a shot was accidentally discharged. The mother, understanding she had been shot, immediately called 911.
Following the emergency call, the daughter departed from the scene but was captured by law enforcement officers approximately two blocks away. When she was arrested, she was still holding the magazine, and the police located a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun.
During the subsequent investigation, the daughter confessed her unfamiliarity with guns. She had been trying to show her mother that the weapon was unloaded by removing the magazine when she accidentally pressed the trigger, firing off a single round.
Mar remains detained at the Laredo County Jail, with bail set at $30,000.
