The grandson of actor Robert De Niro, Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, 19, was discovered dead in a lower Manhattan apartment in what authorities suspect was a drug overdose, given the surrounding circumstances at the scene.
Rodriguez was discovered motionless in a chair on a Sunday afternoon, amidst drug paraphernalia and a white powdery substance, according to police sources. His mother, Drena De Niro, confirmed her son’s death through an emotional announcement on Instagram. In response to condolences received, Robert De Niro expressed his sadness and gratitude, requesting privacy for the family as they grieve their loss.
Rodriguez’s mother, Drena, the oldest daughter of Robert De Niro and his ex-wife Diahnne Abbott, described him as a “beautiful sweet angel.” Medical examiners have yet to confirm the exact cause of his death.
The discovery of Rodriguez’s body was made by a friend who grew concerned after several days without any contact from him. According to the building’s doorman, who saw Rodriguez often but was oblivious to his relationship to Robert De Niro, Rodriguez was temporarily residing in the apartment.
The sudden death of Rodriguez has been a tragic shock to his family, friends, and employees. His father, Carlos Rodriguez, was seen in a visibly upset state as he arrived at Drena’s apartment.
Rodriguez, who had briefly dabbled in acting, had a few minor roles in films including “A Star Is Born,” alongside his mother.
