Newly released body cam footage captured the moment when responding officers heard the final gunshot in a shocking murder-suicide case involving the in-laws of Jimmie Johnson, a NASCAR legend.

The victims, identified as Terry and Jack Janway, Johnson’s mother-in-law and father-in-law respectively, and their 11-year-old grandson, Dalton Janway, were found dead at their residence in Muskogee, Oklahoma, in late June. The evidence points to Terry Janway shooting her husband and grandson before taking her own life, according to Lynn Hamlin, Muskogee Police spokesperson.

The 911 call reporting a disturbance with a firearm initiated the police response. However, the call was suddenly cut off. Subsequent examination of the body cam footage showed officers discovering Jack Janway’s lifeless body under a blanket in the living room. As they prepared to enter the house, announcing their status as law enforcement, the chilling echo of a gunshot was captured.

Details emerging from the 911 call suggest Terry Janway reported an armed intruder in her home before the call was abruptly terminated. Authorities were quick to affirm the murder-suicide nature of the event, ensuring residents there was no continued danger.

Jimmie Johnson, a much-revered NASCAR racer, backed out of a race in Chicago shortly following the incident.

Muskogee Mayor Marlon Coleman, who was also a patient at Jack Janway’s chiropractic practice, expressed his profound shock and sadness over the occurrence. The Janway family was reportedly grappling with severe financial challenges, with a bankruptcy filing last month revealing a debt of $475,000.

Friends of the family have pointed to Terry Janway’s ongoing struggle with depression after losing her son in a skydiving accident nine years ago as a potential factor in the tragic event.
