A man from Diamond Bar, California, has been charged with the murder of two elderly women at an assisted living facility.

The District Attorney for Los Angeles County, George Gascón, announced on Tuesday that two murder charges have been laid against Jianchun Li, 40.

The victims, Monica Moon Lee, 75, and Hee Sook Park, 83, resided at the Happy Home Care facility in Diamond Bar. The women were found deceased on June 24, which led to a response from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

District Attorney Gascón stressed the critical need for increased oversight in care facilities, following this violent and sorrowful episode. Gascón extended sympathies to the victims’ families, vowing to pursue justice.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department received a report of the incident at 8:05 am on June 24 and pronounced both victims dead at the scene. As the investigation unfolded, it was found that Jianchun Li, an on-site caregiver at the facility, allegedly carried out the murders.

The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) is probing the incident. As per CDSS spokesperson Jason Montiel, the facility continues to operate, tending to its four remaining residents amid the investigation.

Jianchun Li is currently detained in the county jail, with his bond set at $4 million.
