Armed, masked individuals attacked a public market, leading to the death of nine people.
The shooters reportedly arrived at the market in Toluca, a central city in Mexico, and commenced firing without hesitation. They then soaked a portion of the market with a flammable liquid and ignited it. Following their devastating act, the culprits swiftly fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of destruction and tragedy.
Officials from law enforcement have disclosed that an investigation is underway into the behavior of private security guards who allegedly vacated their posts during the onslaught. Among the deceased victims, it’s believed that three were minors, though their identities remain unverified.
The assault, which took place about 40 miles west of Mexico City, has not been claimed by any individual or group. Toluca, with a population close to one million, is viewed as part of the capital’s metropolitan area, with many inhabitants commuting daily to Mexico City for work.
Incidents of arson at public markets in Mexico often originate from gangs demanding protection money from vendors.
As per a statement by the State of Mexico prosecutors, the ongoing investigation is exploring the potential that the Toluca attack may be tied to internal disputes over control of commercial zones within the market.
This recent episode of violence comes on the heels of reports from the neighboring southern state of Guerrero, where four taxi drivers’ deaths have been confirmed by authorities. Over the past weekend, at least one taxi was found burning in and around the state capital, Chilpancingo.
Just last week, Toluca was rocked by the gruesome discovery of at least two dismembered bodies along with signs pointing to the violent drug cartel known as the Familia Michoacana. Originally established in the neighboring state of Michoacan in the early 2000s, this gang has largely been displaced from its initial stronghold but has since secured a fresh base in the State of Mexico and neighboring Guerrero.
The Familia Michoacana is infamous for its brutal and merciless attacks, often targeting police officers in Mexico State and local inhabitants in Guerrero.
