Three teenagers from Georgia are facing serious charges of felony murder after a 22-year-old man died during an egging prank which turned violent..
The law enforcement authorities from the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office have identified the involved teens as McKenzie Davenport, 19, Jeremy Munson, 18, and Sydney Maughon, 18. The individuals are now confronting charges of battery, criminal trespass, and malice murder related to the demise of Johnathan Gilbert, also known as Tyler Lane.
Sydney Maughon, who investigators believe fired the fatal shots, faces the additional charges of firearm possession, murder, and aggravated assault.
Furthermore, her battery charge is categorized as an act of “family violence.”
Jeremy Munson is not exempt from the severe charges and faces counts of murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the execution of a felony, and the preceding charges.
Sheriff Darrell Dix stated in a press release on Friday that a link between the victim and the alleged perpetrators was established thanks to witness testimony. The information guided investigators to a residence in Henry County where the vehicle used on the night of the prank was parked. Law enforcement then procured a search warrant for both the house and the car, revealing the firearm suspected to have been used in the deadly act.
It appears that a “lover’s quarrel” between the suspects and the victim may have instigated the incident, according to authorities. Reportedly, the three teenagers intended to prank Gilbert by egging his house, but upon his appearance and confrontation, they tried to retreat to their car.
As an unarmed Gilbert approached the vehicle, it’s alleged that Sydney Maughon, in the back seat, shot multiple bullets at him before fleeing the scene, abandoning Gilbert’s body on Dobbins Mill Road.
Sheriff Dix pointed out that the suspects’ combined planning and actions make them all culpable for the tragic outcome.
