A toddler died in an accident involving window blinds in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The incident took place at a residential property on South Irwin Avenue, around 3:30 pm last Thursday, July 20, as confirmed by the Green Bay Police Department.

The child became entangled in the pull cord of the bedroom window blinds, leading to accidental asphyxiation, as ruled by the Brown County Office of the Medical Examiner.

Incidents of this nature are all too common. Statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission show that, on average, nine children under the age of five succumb to strangulation caused by window covering cords annually. Between 2009 and 2021, there were more than 200 incidents involving window cords and children aged eight and younger, with nearly half of these occurrences resulting in fatalities.

The toll extends beyond the loss of life as surviving victims often confront life-altering injuries such as brain damage and quadriplegia.
