Two newborn babies were discovered unresponsive in a bathroom at a Chicago daycare center on Thursday, July 6, authorities said.
Discovered in a trash bag by a cleaning crew, the alarm was quickly raised to the local police, who responded to the scene in the Streeterville neighborhood around 7:00 p.m.
Following the distress call, police officers arrived to find the infants unresponsive. Despite immediate transfer to Lurie Children’s Hospital and urgent medical intervention, the babies were sadly pronounced dead.
It was disclosed later that a 29 year old woman, an employee at the daycare, had been found an hour earlier in the bathroom covered in blood. Northwestern Memorial Hospital promptly admitted her for surgery for unidentified injuries. According to a statement released from Bright Horizons, the incident took place at the center when a staff member “experienced a medical emergency that resulted in the unanticipated delivery of newborn twin babies.”
Later that evening, an official statement from the Chicago police confirmed an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two newborns.
