Maryland police have arrested a mother and her 19-year-old daughter for killing the family’s grandmother and attempting to conceal her remains.

The Prince George’s County Police Department has announced that Candace Craig, 44, and Salia Hardy, 19, have been charged in relation to the death of 71-year-old Margaret Craig, which occurred at a residence in Landover the previous month.

Following a 911 call from an anxious individual who had not seen Margaret Craig for a while, police officers executed a welfare check at the home on June 2. Candace Craig answered the door and allowed the officers to search the property for Margaret. Upon entering the basement, the officers were met with a distinct odor of human decomposition, according to a statement from the Prince George’s County Police Department. Initial findings, supported by additional pieces of evidence and interviews, suggest that Candace Craig took her mother’s life on May 23. Hardy is alleged to have helped her mother dispose of the body the next day. It’s alleged that they used a chainsaw to dismember Margaret and burned her remains on a charcoal grill. The scene revealed human remains, blood, and materials associated with the murder and cleanup.

The reason behind the killing is currently unknown and is the subject of ongoing investigations.

Candace Craig has been accused of first and second-degree murder, while Hardy faces charges of being an accessory after the fact. Both are presently incarcerated. The medical examiner will confirm the identity of the victim and establish the cause of death.
