Tragedy struck the popular Egyptian resort of Hurghada when tourists watched in horror as a shark attacked and devoured a man just a few feet from the crowded beach.
The incident occurred at the Dream Beach Hotel and the victim was a Russian citizen, according to reports from Russian media. The man, identified as 23-year-old Vladimir Popov, had been residing in Egypt for several months.
Russia’s consul-general in Hurghada, Viktor Voropayev, confirmed the deadly attack. He revealed that Popov cried out for his father, who was present on the beach, as he valiantly struggled against the shark. Footage captured the harrowing moment when hotel staff urgently warned swimmers to evacuate the water as the shark’s fin approached. Despite Popov’s brave fight, witnesses soon realized his efforts were futile. Onlookers heard the chilling words, “It’s eating his remains now.” Shortly after, the shark pulled Popov under, leaving no hope for rescue.
Russian media reported that Popov’s girlfriend managed to swim to safety. However, her anguish was evident as she wept uncontrollably on the beach, with bystanders offering comfort.
In the wake of the incident, authorities swiftly instituted a ban on tourists entering the water at the resort. The attack left witnesses in a state of shock, with some recounting the quick response of the rescuers, and others describing the disturbing sight of the shark consuming the victim. The shark responsible for the attack was subsequently captured and killed.
