A 22-year-old expectant mother was targeted in a horrific shooting incident while in her car.

The incident unfolded in Washington DC on 37th Street SE at around 11:20 am on Thursday, June 15, when two men wielding assault rifles pulled up in a white sedan and began shooting.

The pregnant victim, identified as Samya Gill, was in the car with the baby’s father when the attackers struck. Despite being wounded, the man managed to drive about a mile away to Minnesota Avenue and Dix Street for help. Gill was immediately taken to a hospital where she gave birth through a C-section but tragically lost her life. The newborn, named Zailey, is battling for life in critical condition, while the father is recovering from his injuries.

Police have released surveillance images of the suspects dressed in light and dark clothing. Though the attack seems targeted, the exact motive remains unknown. A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the suspects’ arrest and conviction.

If the baby lives, she will be raised by her grandmother.

The shooting is part of an increase in homicides in Washington, DC, which are up 16% compared to the same period in 2022.
