An American tourist was killed and another was injured near Germany’s famous “Sleeping Beauty” Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, June 14, near Marienbruecke, a famed pedestrian bridge known for its stunning view of Neuschwanstein, the palace that inspired Disney’s film “Sleeping Beauty.” The Bavarian State Police have since released a statement detailing the events that transpired.
According to authorities, two American women, aged 21 and 22, crossed paths with a 30-year-old American man while hiking on a trail east of the bridge. The man convinced the women to follow him to a scenic viewpoint. However, his motives took a violent turn as he physically assaulted the younger woman. When the 22-year-old attempted to intervene, the attacker choked her and brutally pushed her down a steep slope. He then attempted to sexually assault the 21-year-old before also pushing her down the incline. Both women fell nearly 165 feet, as reported by the police.
Mountain rescue services from the nearby town of Fuessen swiftly responded to the situation and successfully rescued the injured 22-year-old, who was then transported to a hospital and remained responsive. The 21-year-old, however, had sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The suspect fled the scene but was soon apprehended by police. Although the identities of those involved have not been released, a spokesperson from the Bavarian State Police confirmed that all three were American tourists.
On Thursday, June 14, the suspect appeared before a judge in the neighboring town of Kempten. The judge ordered that he be detained in jail pending a potential indictment. He is currently under investigation for charges of murder, attempted murder, and sexual offense.
The police have appealed to any witnesses who might have information or photographic evidence related to the incident to come forward and assist with their ongoing investigation.
