Authorities in Michigan are investigating the mysterious death of a college student discovered lying at the roadside with head trauma.
Mia Kanu, 23, was found in the early hours of June 3, after having exited a vehicle on her way back from a party.
Kanu, a student at Tennessee State University studying veterinary medicine, was discovered in front of an apartment complex in Southfield, a suburb of Detroit. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on June 5.
The circumstances surrounding Kanu’s exit from the vehicle and the cause of her death remain undetermined and are currently under investigation by the Southfield Police Department. “At this point, the cause of death is unknown. We are considering all possibilities, including homicide,” Sergeant Jared Womble said. An autopsy is expected to be conducted as part of the investigation.
Deputy Chief Jeffrey Jagielski of the Southfield Police Department underscored the need to establish the sequence of events leading to Kanu’s discovery. “Was it an accident? Was she pushed?” Jagielski questioned. The driver of the vehicle is cooperating fully with the investigation.
Mia Kanu’s mother, Bianca Vanmeter, while grieving and planning her daughter’s funeral, expressed her confusion and desperation for answers. She questioned why Kanu’s friends, if present at the time, didn’t immediately call 911.
Tennessee State University issued a statement mourning Kanu’s passing. They described her as an energetic, hardworking person with a deep love for animals. She was involved in research in the Food and Animal Science fields at the university’s Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Emily Hayes, a research associate who worked with Kanu, expressed her sadness, “It’s heartbreaking to know that someone so full of life is now gone.”
