Authorities apprehended the mother of a missing five-year-old child following the alleged discovery of the girl’s remains inside her apartment in Aurora, Colorado.
Alexus Tanielle Nelson, 27, who was initially detained for alleged attempts to deceive a public official, is now facing additional charges as of Thursday, June 1. According to the Aurora Police Department, Nelson has been accused of child abuse resulting in death, along with the disturbing charges of tampering with a deceased body and obstruction of justice. These charges were instituted after the finding of the girl’s body in a closet within Nelson’s apartment on May 31.
Nelson’s mother initiated the police intervention when she voiced concerns about statements made by her daughter that alarmed her about the safety of her granddaughter. Nelson told responding officers that she had arranged for her daughter to be adopted but was unable to produce any validating documentation for her assertion, and authorities were unable to confirm it via state records. Subsequently, she was taken into custody.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has preliminarily identified the missing girl as Maha Li Hobbs. At a press briefing on Thursday, Aurora Police Chief Art Acevedo stated his assurance in the identification of the victim and alluded to the high possibility of levying murder charges.
Nelson is currently being held with a bond set at $100,000.
